Screen Scene leads Ireland’s VFX industry into international recognition at the Visual Effects Society Awards January 14, 2015

The Visual Effects Society announced the nominees for the 2015 VES Awards last night, and we’re delighted to report that Screen Scene has been nominated in the category for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Photoreal/Live Action Broadcast Program, for their incredible work on Ripper Street – Series Three – “Whitechapel Terminus”.

The highly esteemed “Oscars of the Visual Effects world”, the VES Awards celebrate outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in film, animation, television, commercials and video games, with the likes of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Interstellar, and Guardians of the Galaxy all in the running for accolades at this years event.

Ripper Street will compete against the likes of American Horror Story, Black Sails, and Penny Dreadful, in their category at this years glittering ceremony, which takes place on the Feb 4th, in Los Angeles.

This is Screen Scene’s third VES encounter in four years, with the SSVFX team nominated for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Broadcast Program for their exemplary work on Sky One miniseries, Moonfleet in 2013, and of course, that fateful night in 2012 when VFX Supervisor Ed Bruce skipped off stage clutching his well earned gong for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Broadcast Program for Screen Scene’s incredible work Season One of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

When pressed for a quote on this fantastic news, the jubilant Ed Bruce dictated the following statement to me while cartwheeling from one end of the room to the other: ‘It’s absolutely amazing to get the VES nomination! To be selected alongside such a high standard of nominees is a wonderful complement to our work here in SSVFX. We are very privileged to get another VES nomination and showcase SSVFX’s capabilities next to many of the best VFX houses in the world. We have such a wonderful group of artists. This nomination is a testament to their talent. I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved for Tiger Aspect.’

Exploding into a suprise jumping jack before freeze framing like a sculpture of Atlas atop his swivel chair, Ed fixed me with a soul probing gaze and continued, ‘This is also great news for the ever growing Visual Effects Industry in Ireland with the top VFX Companies recently establishing VFX Association Ireland to promote Ireland Nationally and Internationally as a VFX centre of excellence. This nomination further emphasizes the substantial talent and scale already available in Ireland and its potential to continue to grow as an industry.’

The third season of hit Victorian crime drama, Ripper Street recently returned to screens courtesy of Amazon Prime, and is set to be broadcast on BBC One and BBC America in the coming months, so if you haven’t caught Screen Scene’s spectacular work on the show yet, you’re in for a treat, as demonstrated in the fantastic VFX breakdown video above.

SSVFX once again have been solely responsible for creating the show’s Visual Effects for Tiger Aspect.
